The Minority in Parliament has urgently criticized the Appointments Committee’s scheduled vetting of Supreme Court Judges Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, labelling the process unlawful and demanding immediate attention.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin referred Justice Essah’s and Professor Oppong’s nominations to the Appointments Committee for vetting, sparking dissent from Minority Chief Whip Governs Agbodza.
Agbodza expressed dismay over what he deemed an unauthorized meeting without consultation with minority committee members.
Agbodza asserted, questioning the necessity of rushing the vetting process for such esteemed judicial figures who hold the highest court of our land, the Supreme Court, in their hands.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader, echoed concerns and strongly called for a delay in vetting until proper procedures are followed, emphasizing the importance of due process in such a significant matter.
“The NDC minority is not against any of the two nominees in person.
“We are asking for an opportunity to do our work well and then diligently do what the public has asked us to do. Let’s advertise and reschedule this as soon as possible,” Forson emphasized, reaffirming the Minority’s commitment to their responsibilities.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions regarding parliamentary procedures and the oversight of judicial appointments in Ghana’s political landscape.
