The Minority in Parliament has rebuked the Majority caucus for urging John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to engage in a debate with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, ahead of the December elections.

During a session on Wednesday, the majority reiterated their insistence that Mahama accepts Bawumia’s debate challenge, arguing that such a forum would enable Ghanaians to assess the economic competence of both parties.

However, speaking in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson dismissed the proposition, asserting that Bawumia, whom he likened to a “driver’s mate,” was not qualified to debate an experienced leader like Mahama.

“Mr. Speaker, monkeys, they say, play by sizes. Mr. Speaker, how can a driver’s mate debate an experienced driver?” Forson questioned. He proposed that Bawumia first debate the Minority’s spokespersons on finance, economy, and budget matters before considering a debate with Mahama.

“For the issues of finance, it’s Honourable Adongo. For the economy, it’s Honourable Kwaku Ricketts Hagan. And for the budget, it’s Honourable Ampem Darko,” Forson pointed out, suggesting these officials as more suitable debate opponents for Bawumia.

Tensions are rising ahead of the elections, and the debate over debates reflects broader political strategies aimed at showcasing leadership capabilities to the Ghanaian electorate.
