The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has firmly opposed proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), which seek to grant Members of Parliament (MPs) the privilege of using sirens and exceeding speed limits during official duties.

In a statement signed by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the caucus leader, the Minority Caucus declared their solidarity with the Ghanaian public in rejecting the amendment. They called upon the Minister for Transport to withdraw the Legislative Instrument (LI) before it advances into law.

According to the Minority, the government should prioritize addressing critical issues affecting Ghanaians, including the high cost of living, food inflation, unemployment, soaring fuel costs, currency depreciation, and a burdensome tax regime pushing businesses to relocate to neighbouring West African countries.

“We have instructed all our Members on the Committee to oppose it at the committee level strongly. We have also directed all 137 NDC Members of Parliament to vote en bloc against the Legislative Instrument when it is brought to the floor,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Andy Appiah-Kubi defended the proposed amendment, arguing that it aims to enhance parliamentary productivity and ensure punctuality amidst heavy traffic conditions in Accra.

The debate over the LI underscores broader concerns about governance and public perception of legislative priorities in Ghana.
