Miss Malaika Ghana 2023 and National HIV Youth Ambassador Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko urged Ghanaian youth to confront the persistent threat of HIV during a recent engagement at Wesley Grammar School.

Addressing more than 800 students on July 31, 2024, as part of her “Live On Campaign” under the ART@20 initiative sponsored by UNFPA and ABBOTT. Nsarko emphasized the critical need for collective action against HIV, particularly among young people.

“HIV remains prevalent and continues to devastate lives by undermining the immune system,” Nsarko stated, underlining the pressing need to prevent new infections and support those affected.

“Abstaining from sex and proactive prevention efforts are essential to safeguarding our future.”

The campaign aims to mentor and empower youth to make informed health decisions, combat stigma, and reduce HIV transmission, highlighting the significant role the students can play in this fight.

Nsarko shared personal anecdotes underscoring the importance of abstinence and protection.

“HIV affects everyone, regardless of age or profession. It’s crucial to prioritize health and safety,” she emphasized.

The interactive session saw students actively participating, exchanging knowledge, and posing questions, demonstrating the value of their contributions.

Ghana’s National AIDS/STI Control Programme (NACP) reported a 1.5% national adult HIV prevalence in 2023, translating to approximately 334,095 people living with HIV.

Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo, Programme Manager for NACP, encouraged students to seek knowledge, maintain good health practices, and remain resilient.

Rev. Aku from PAYDP, representing UNFPA, emphasized the importance of sexual education and self-empowerment through knowledge.

The event also featured a dramatic performance by students, showcasing their understanding of HIV issues and sharing personal experiences.

The Headmistress expressed gratitude for the impactful visit, commending the team for their efforts in raising awareness and promoting health education among the students.
