Botswana’s mobile telephone users keep soaring, according to the latest figures from the country’s data authority.

Statistics Botswana’s latest Information and Communications Technology (ICT) statistics for the third quarter of 2020 released on Friday points to a steady rise.

“Mobile cellular telephone subscriptions increased by 1.8 percent from 3,747,322 recorded in Q2 2020 to 3,813,195 in Q3 2020,” said Burton Mguni, the Statistician General.

Statistics Botswana further says that in Q3 2020, both pre-paid and post-paid mobile cellular telephone subscriptions increased.

“Pre-paid mobile cellular telephone subscriptions rose by 1.6 percent after registering 3,678,386 in Q3 2020 from 3,620,072 in Q2 2020,” Mguni said, adding that the post-paid mobile cellular telephone subscriptions went up by 5.9 percent in Q3 2020, from 127,250 in Q2 2020 to 134,809.

In addition, the report further says mobile internet subscriptions increased by 10.4 percent while fixed internet subscriptions decreased by 17.0 percent during the period under review.

Botswana has over the years posted positive mobile phone use penetration, which economic analysts have considered a good for e-commerce.

Meanwhile the country’s fixed telephone lines subscriptions realized a slight decrease of 0.6 percent in Q3 2020, from 140,055 in Q2 2020 to 139,281. Enditem
