The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), has started the distribution of 200 cockerels to selected farmers on a pilot programme, to encourage the production of poultry in the Upper Manya Krobo District.

cockerelsSources from MOFA informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Media Auditing and Tracking of Development Project Team who are being sponsored by STAR Ghana that, most residents in the district are not into poultry production, and with the introduction of this initiative, it is expected to pave the way for more people to be introduced to poultry production .

Ten selected farmers would benefit from the initial distribution of the cockerels, and the serious ones would receive further support.

The project is expected to help increase the production of poultry in the area, and help meet the domestic poultry needs of the people.

It will further reduce the consumption of imported poultry meat in the district, and the country as a whole.

Already, there are composite poultry feeds on the market, where the farmers can go and purchase, and information gathered by the GNA/STAR Ghana Media Auditing and Tracking of Development Project Team, indicates that the selected farmers have been educated on how to select the best feed for the fowls, to ensure their best care.
