The 35th edition of the annual Mole water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conference opened at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho, the Volta Regional capital early Monday.

Present at the opening ceremony were Lydia Eyram Alhassan, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Archibald Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, Harold Esseku,  Senior Sanitation Specialist at the World Bank,  and  Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, Paramount Chief of the Anfoega Taditional Area and President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs who chaired the opening ceremony.

Also present were Beata Awinpoka Akanyani, Chairperson of the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), lead organizers of the Mole Conference, Ewurabena Yanyi- Akorful, Country Director for WaterAid Ghana, and representatives of other civil society organizations in the WASH sector.

In the theme presentation, Engineer Esseku emphasised that mindset transformation is needed from leaders right down to all citizens to help Ghana to meet its targets in WASH.

“The way we look at sanitation, water and hygiene is very critical to help solve the issues facing Ghana in the WASH sector,” he stated.

“Every opportunity we get as sector players, let us champion the things we do to help us transform the sector.  If we are not bold to talk about the challenges that face the sector and the things we need to do as a country, how can we meet our sustainable development goal (SDG) targets? “ the World Bank official wondered.

He said Ghana can only meet its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on WASH if  the right things are done.
