The Chief Executive Officer of Mobile Money Limited (MoMo), Shaibu Haruna, has stated that the company will continue to invest in robust security measures to combat fraud and cybersecurity risks facing the Mobile Money sector.

Haruna stressed that fraud remains a prevalent issue that continues to hinder efforts to promote digital and financial inclusion in the country.

“MoMo fraud is an issue we are very passionate about at Mobile Money LTD, and we will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitization and awareness initiatives.

Let me use this platform to emphasize that every customer is the first and last line of defense. We need to protect our PINs and avoid clicking on unsolicited links, responding to fake SMS messages, or following the instructions of any random caller,” he highlighted.

Haruna made these remarks as MoMo marked its 15th anniversary in Accra under the theme: “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial & Digital Inclusion.” He highlighted Ghana’s rapid growth in digital payments, driven by MoMo’s broad adoption and the increasing convenience of mobile transactions.

“Despite the successes chalked up over the last 15 years, there are still some challenges we face, and it is important for us to look at how we can collectively address these issues and continue to drive financial, digital, and economic inclusion in Ghana,” Haruna said.

Although mobile connectivity continues to improve, there are still coverage gaps, especially in rural and remote areas. Haruna reaffirmed MoMo’s commitment to investing in digital infrastructure to promote widespread connectivity and expand the frontiers of digital financial inclusion.

“We remain committed to providing a great customer experience to all our customers, regardless of their location. Our primary focus is to put service support at the fingertips of our customers to minimize the need for them to travel long distances or wait for an extended period at our touchpoints to have an issue resolved,” he stated.

He also noted the service’s impact on small and medium-sized enterprises, education, healthcare, and government services, emphasizing MoMo’s role in bridging the gap between the banked and unbanked populations.

Haruna acknowledged the critical partnerships that have supported MoMo’s growth, including collaborations with regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and technology partners.

Looking ahead, MoMo has planned several activities to celebrate its anniversary, including market launches in major cities, new service rollouts, customer promotions, and an awards night to recognize outstanding contributors.

MoMo initially created to democratize financial services through mobile technology, has grown into a crucial part of daily life for millions of Ghanaians. What began as a simple mobile money transfer service has expanded to include loans, insurance, international remittances, and investments.

As Ghana becomes one of Africa’s fastest-growing digital payment markets, MoMo’s evolution reflects the increasing adoption of e-commerce and mobile payments for their convenience and safety.

The event marked not only a reflection on MoMo’s achievements but also a renewed commitment to driving progress and making a lasting difference in Ghana’s financial landscape.
