A magnitude-5.5 earthquake which on Saturday morning hit the central Mozambican province of Manica has destroyed 108 houses, local authorities said on Sunday.
According to the Institute for Disaster Management of Mozambique (INGC), the quake had its epicenter in the region of Chipinge, in the neighboring Zimbabwe, which is 30 kilometers away from the district of Mossurize in Manica.
“These damages are preliminary data. We are also investigating whether the houses were of precarious or conventional construction,” Mossurize District Administrator Fernando Samuel told reporters on Sunday.
The administrator joined the INGC delegation that is monitoring the situation and exploring data in other parts of the province.
“There is damage that has been caused in other districts, we have teams on the ground doing the impact assessment,” he said. Enditem
