President John Dramani Mahama on March 3, 2014 cut sod for construction work to begin on the first 50 batch of Community Day Senior High Schools [CDSHSs] as part of a total of 200 of such projects [Community Day Senior High Schools] across the length and breadth of the country.
The establishment of the Community Day Senior High Schools would indeed, expand and improve access to secondary education as well as develop the quality and affordability of education especially to the rural poor.
In complimenting Gov’t of Ghana’s praiseworthy efforts and promise to build 200 Community Day Senior High Schools before the end of 2016, the World Bank, comprehending the need for providing access for quality education, is financing 23 of the Community Day Senior High Schools, leaving 177 [standard 4-storey classroom E-block and furnishings/inputs] to be fully funded by Gov’t of Ghana. So far Gov’t has provided funding and awarded contracts for the construction of 100 Community Day SHSs, bringing the total Community Day Senior High Schools funded [GOG and WB] and under construction to 123. Pursuant to the availability of funds, Gov’t should be able to award the remaining 77 for construction before 2016 ends.
Since March 3, 2014 when construction of the Community Day Senior High Schools started, seven out of the 123 Community Day Senior High Schools have so far been completed, inaugurated and handed over to the beneficiary communities, namely, 1.Attah-Mills Community Day SHS-Ekumfi Otuam [Central Region], 2.Bamiankor Community Day SHS – Nzema East [Western Region], 3.Nkwanta Community Day SHS-Nkwanta South [Volta Region], 4.Kwaobaa-Nyanoa Community Day SHS- Upper West Akim [Eastern Region], 5.Nchumuruman Community Day SHS- Krachi East [Volta Region], 6.Dermaa Community Day SHS-Tano South [Brong Ahafo Region], 7.Abeaseman Community Day SHS- Pru [Brong Ahafo Region].
Indeed many of the Community Day Senior High Schools all over the country are ready for commissioning with the rest at advanced stages of completion. President John Dramani Mahama a few weeks ago instructed the minister of education to ensure that any completed Community Day SHS should be put to use immediately and not wait for him to commission them.
It is worth mentioning that, contractually it takes at least eighteen months to complete one Community Day SHS and by rational reckoning, more than seventy-five of the Community Day Senior High Schools shall be completed for use by the end of 2016 whiles work progresses on the others.
Indeed, the doubting Thomses can go and see for themselves. Those magnificent Community Day Senior High Schools are visible to all over the country already in use providing accessibility and provision of quality education to the future leaders of Ghana.
