Some 367 Mozambican individuals serving their sentences in the neighboring South Africa were repatriated on Thursday, following the actions by South Africa to contain the COVID-19 spread in the country, Radio Mozambique reported on Friday.

According to the spokesperson of migration services in Maputo, Juca Bata, most of those returnees were amnestied by South Africa through presidential decrees.

Bata said they were screened for COVID-19 and the procedures have been taken regarding their legal situation in Mozambique.

“All the citizens were sent to their final destinations after we checked with the local police to guarantee that all of them have their situation regularized in the country. Those who have problems in Mozambique will face local procedures,” said the spokesperson.

About 1,800 Mozambican citizens have been repatriated from South Africa since April.
