The government of Mozambique has committed to leveraging the potential of its youth for the country’s economic and social development, highlighting the vital role of young people in the construction, maintenance, and promotion of national peace and security.
The announcement was made by Mozambique’s Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane during the National Youth, Peace, and Security Summit, themed “Youth Dialogue for Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding, and Consolidation in Mozambique,” in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, Thursday.
“If each of us, in our daily lives, cultivates these principles and values, we will contribute to the consolidation of national unity, which is based on defending Mozambican identity, patriotic spirit, solidarity, inclusion, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence,” said Maleiane.
The event aimed to foster an open discussion about the historical journey, progress, challenges, and prospects of youth in pursuing collective and consensual solutions.
The government of Mozambique has been adopting and implementing measures that capitalize on the potential of young people for the country’s economic and social development, the prime minister said.
“To ensure greater youth participation in maintaining peace and consolidating national unity, the government has undertaken actions that include strengthening youth associations, improving access to education and technical-vocational training, and providing funding for youth income-generating initiatives,” he said.
Argentino Vatiua, the executive director of the Organization for the Promotion of Peace and Humanitarian Development, a local non-governmental organization, said that the event was to bring together youth from various sectors for a dialogue on the national agenda, advocating for conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and peace consolidation in Mozambique.
The event was attended by young people from all over the country, representing peace academies and forums, community learning centers for peace, among others.
