The remains of former Mozambican liberation fighter and founding member of the country’s ruling party Frelimo, Marcelino dos Santos, were deposited in the Mozambican Heroes’ Crypt after a state funeral held on Wednesday in Maputo.

The main process was led by President Filipe Nyusi and witnessed by various government figures, including the leader of the main opposition party Renamo, diplomatic corps and foreign representatives.

President Nyusi said in the eulogy that Marcelino dos Santos died at a crucial moment in Mozambican history, who has always been holding firm convictions and thinking about the people.

“You died in a unique moment when strange forces against the interests of Mozambicans seek to put a brake on our march toward peace and our economic and social emancipation,” he said.

Nyusi said Mozambicans will be inspired by dos Santos’ vision of working for a prosperous nation.

Tomas Salomao, former executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community, said Marcelino dos Santos has always defended the development of the country, devoted himself to improving people’s living conditions. Enditem
