Mozambique suffered a loss of about 8 million U.S. dollars (544 million meticais) in 2019 due to corruption, Attorney General Beatriz Buchili said on Wednesday.
Buchili revealed the figure while presenting the Annual Justice Report of 2019 to the nation at the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo.
Some 1,576 cases related to corruption were processed, with 974 concluded, and 187 public managers were held responsible in 2017, she said.
“It is noted that corruption continues to interfere negatively in the lives of citizens, namely in their access to education, health, employment among others, consequently undermining the efforts towards the socio-economic development of the country, ” said Buchili.
The attorney general said judicial authorities confiscated about 167 million meticais, eight house properties and 12 vehicles last year, while urging the creation of an Asset Recovery Act and an office to enforce it. Enditem
