Mozambique’s former finance minister Manuel Chang was detained at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Saturday while heading for Dubai, local newspaper Carta de Mozambique reported on Sunday.

The newspaper said the detention was confirmed by the Mozambican ambassador to South Africa and that the detention was based on an international arrest warrant.

“There is evidence that Chang has a large fortune in Swiss accounts, making up more than the value of Mozambique’s hidden debt,” the newspaper said, adding that the detention has nothing to do with the hidden debt process.

The newspaper said the United States demanded Chang’s extradition for alleged money laundering, wire fraud and securities fraud. Enditem
