Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has sharply criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over alleged dishonesty concerning financing the National Cathedral project.
Ablakwa accused the President of misleading the public, religious leaders, and God about the project’s funding sources.
Despite earlier promises that public funds would not be used, it was later revealed that state funds had indeed been allocated to the project, igniting significant controversy.
In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Ablakwa condemned the President for what he described as a blatant violation of the Constitution, citing the lack of parliamentary approval for using public funds.
“How on earth can you spend $58.1 million on what is claimed to be the world’s most expensive pit in the name of building a Cathedral?” Ablakwa said.
“You assured us public funds would not be used, yet documents reveal otherwise.
The eminent clergy, the Ghanaian people, and even the Almighty have been deceived.”
Ablakwa also criticized the lack of transparency and accountability, noting that an RTI request revealed the Procurement Authority needed to learn about the project.
“This represents an unbelievable disregard for our constitution and laws,” he added.
On July 3, 2024, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, announced in Parliament that GH₵339 million had been allocated to the National Cathedral project to ensure its completion.
