In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, MTN Ghana held an informative session on October 28, 2024, at the MTN House in Ridge, Accra, aimed at educating media practitioners about cybersecurity essentials and safe digital practices.
The session was themed “Living with Security” and attracted a diverse group of journalists, some attending in person while others joined virtually.
The event featured Mr. Bernard Acquah, MTN Ghana’s Chief Information Officer, as the keynote speaker, with Mr. Koby Spiky Nkrumah, CEO of ctrl. IT and EIB Digital, moderating. The discussions centered on the responsible use of digital devices, mobile phones, and social media platforms.
Mr. Acquah, drawing from his extensive IT experience, shared valuable tips for enhancing personal cybersecurity.
He advised attendees to turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not in use, cautioning that leaving them active can expose devices to potential breaches. He also underscored the importance of safeguarding personal information, including ID card details and other sensitive documents, from potential hackers.
Highlighting best practices, Mr. Acquah recommended regular software updates to counter cyber threats and warned against falling for scams or unsolicited notifications claiming prize winnings. “You can’t win a lottery you haven’t entered,” he said, urging vigilance.
He also advised parents to monitor their children’s phone activities, promoting cybersecurity awareness as a vital part of responsible digital behavior. Mr. Acquah emphasized MTN’s commitment to cybersecurity, stating, “Cybersecurity is fundamental in the digital age. MTN is dedicated to equipping our community with knowledge and tools for online safety.”
The event concluded with a reminder from Mr. Nkrumah: “Don’t let your smart device outsmart you.” He urged attendees to treat their devices securely and avoid casually sharing them, as this can lead to vulnerabilities.
Through this initiative, MTN Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to building cybersecurity awareness among the media and, by extension, the broader community.
