In a ceremony at GMIC/NITA office, eight initial incubates who have been selected for a two-year incubation program were outdoored.
The ICT entrepreneurs were selected from various tertiary institutions for developing innovative programmes for various industries, including robotics, insurance, education and shipping, among others.
As part of the incubation, they will receive training in the area of software development, programming and application development to further enhance their skills. They will also be mentored by experts from various fields to enable them gain valuable skills, knowledge and insights to help develop their businesses.
Speaking at the launch, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, said, “Our overriding objective for this partnership is to provide youth entrepreneurs (incubates) with the necessary skills and resources needed to build successful and financially viable businesses. This will help improve livelihoods, provide employment and strengthen the economy.”
Mrs. Lumor added, “We at MTN Ghana Foundation, and indeed MTN Ghana, are very excited about this project because it gives meaning to our dream of building ICT businesses in the country. Without entrepreneurs like you, our dream of making Ghana a digital economy cannot be achieved.”
Dr Omane Boamah, Minister of Communications, who was the special guest at the launch,commended MTN for partnering the Ministry of Communications to embark on the project. He expressed his confidence in MTN’s support to the project and encouraged the incubates to take advantage of the opportunity given them.
On his part, the Director General of National Information Technology Agency& GMIC, Mr. George Atta-Boateng, also expressed his excitement about the timeliness of the support provided by the MTN Ghana Foundation to revive the incubator project.
The Ghana Multimedia Incubation Center is a project under the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).
GMIC provides Business Incubation/ICT Entrepreneurship Development and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Services in the country.
MTN Ghana in January 2014 signed an agreement with the Ministry of Communications to support an ICT Business Incubation Project which will enable them select and support 10 start –ups companies. This project support falls under the economic empowerment portfolio of the MTN Foundation.
Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, MTN has invested more than GH¢ 22.2 million in over 135 major projects which are directly impacting the lives of numerous Ghanaians.
