In a heartwarming gesture during the festive season, MTN Ghana has delivered over 200 baby hampers to new mothers across the country, as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts.
The hampers, filled with essential baby items such as diapers, towels, soaps, and clothes, were distributed to mothers who gave birth on Christmas Eve.
As part of the telecom giant’s annual socio-sustainable initiatives, MTN Ghana’s Foundation has extended its goodwill beyond the holiday season, reaching out to families in need of support during a time of celebration. Mrs. Charity Darko, MTN’s Corporate Affairs Manager for the Northern Business District in the Ashanti Region, revealed that the company distributed a total of over 600 hampers across 30 health facilities nationwide, with 17 of those facilities located in Northern Ghana.
“This donation is aimed at easing the financial burden on new mothers by supplementing the baby items they often need to purchase,” said Mrs. Darko. She explained that for many, the hampers come as a much-needed relief, particularly for those with limited financial resources or for mothers of abandoned babies. She added that this initiative is part of MTN’s larger social responsibility commitment, aimed at demonstrating love and care for the communities it serves.
The joyful surprise extended to the maternity wards was felt most acutely at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where 22 mothers received hampers from MTN on December 26. One mother expressed her gratitude, noting, “We weren’t expecting this kind gesture from MTN. We thought they were bringing airtime or bundles, so this was a huge surprise.”
Nurse Manager Madam Gifty Serwaa Adu at KATH also expressed her thanks but highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by many mothers in the region. While appreciative of MTN’s donation, she pointed out that many mothers still struggle with high medical bills, sometimes ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 Ghanaian cedis due to complications during childbirth. Some mothers, particularly those without family support, face the additional burden of prolonged stays in hospitals, which can further increase their risk of infection.
With MTN’s contribution making a significant impact on the lives of many, the company’s gesture emphasizes the importance of corporate social responsibility in improving the well-being of vulnerable groups. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in the healthcare system, where financial constraints often limit access to necessary care. As the holiday season continues, MTN Ghana’s thoughtful intervention brings not only physical relief but also emotional comfort to mothers across the country.
