MTN Ghana marked the 15th anniversary of its Mobile Money (MoMo) service on August 7, 2024, with a major event in Kumasi that highlighted its achievements and its commitment to combating fraud.

Nii Adortey Mingle, General Manager for MTN Northern Business District, emphasized the company’s strengthened efforts to address MoMo fraud, a persistent challenge that undermines digital and financial inclusion.

At the launch of this year’s Mobile Money Month, themed “Empowering Communities, Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion,” Mingle outlined MTN’s dedication to enhancing security and increasing public awareness about fraud prevention.

“Fraud remains a significant barrier to our mission of promoting digital and financial inclusion,” Mingle said. “We are deeply committed to providing a secure digital environment for all Ghanaians.

We will continue collaborating with stakeholders through awareness initiatives and invest in robust security measures to protect our valued customers.”

He also highlighted the positive impact of the Ghana Card, which has significantly reduced instances of theft and impersonation.

MoMo has been instrumental in expanding financial services to underserved and rural areas where traditional banking options were limited.

“The introduction of MoMo has transformed how many Ghanaians manage their finances, empowering them and enhancing their access to financial services,” Mingle noted.

The event featured acknowledgements for MoMo beneficiaries, including individuals, groups, and associations that have seen substantial benefits from the service.

For instance, the Ashanti Online Driver’s Union received over 300 merchant SIM cards to facilitate payments. At the same time, members of the petty traders’ association praised MoMo for its crucial role in their transactions.

The anniversary celebrations will continue throughout the month, including regional market launches, parades, new service and product introductions, customer promotions, and a comprehensive anti-fraud campaign.

The festivities include skills training sessions for small and medium-sized enterprises and an awards night to honour exceptional stakeholders.

MTN Ghana’s 15th-anniversary celebration underscores its ongoing commitment to enhancing financial and digital inclusion across the country, reinforcing MoMo’s significance in Ghana’s economic landscape.
