MTN Ghana, one of the leading telecommunications companies in the country, through its Foundation, has organized training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for 50 selected girls from the La Bawleshie Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS) in Accra.

They were trained in “Android App Development” and how to develop a technology solution that created safe space for girls to express themselves.

This was timed to coincide with the celebration of the international girls in ICT day.

“Expending horizons, changing attitudes” was the theme chose for this year’s event.

Madam Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, the Senior Manager of Corporate Communications, said the company, was determined to lead the effort at helping to expose girls to the opportunities offered by ICT.

It was eager to create the awareness for them to choose careers in that field, she added.

They needed to be encouraged to embrace and make the most of ICT to transform the world.

She indicated that statistics showed that only 20 per cent of technology jobs in leading technology firms was held by women, and said that must change.

Madam Fiagbenu urged the girls to develop interest in the ICT industry, take advantage of the opportunity, learn new skills, be innovative, and to go out to challenge the status-quo.

“It is important to know that, almost all jobs now require some basic skills in ICT, be it healthcare, education, environmental protection, communications or good governance.,”

Five women in ICT from MTN Ghana were present to inspire the girls with their experiences, urging them to explore career options, read more books to make the right decisions in life.

Madam Regina Honu, the Chief Executive Officer of Soronko Academy, noted that only three per cent of women globally, were into ICT creating a huge gap in that space.
That could not continue because the world was increasingly becoming digital.

It was on the basis of this that it was vital to empower girls to know that there were numerous opportunities in ICT they could take advantage of.
