MTN Ghana has reiterated its steadfast support for the “Girls in ICT” initiative, underscoring its dedication to empowering young women in technology.
Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer for MTN Ghana reaffirmed this commitment during the culmination of this year’s Girls in ICT program, held at the University of Ghana and organized by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization.
Ms Adwoa Wiafe emphasized that MTN Ghana’s partnership with the Ministry reflects the company’s strategic objectives and core values. “We are deeply invested in supporting the Ministry and this program because it aligns with MTN’s priorities.
These are causes we champion daily, and we will continue to support this initiative as long as we can,” she stated.
She further explained, “Connectivity and inclusion are fundamental principles for us.
This program resonates with our belief in ensuring everyone enjoys the benefits of a modern connected life, mainly through education in ICT for girls across the country.”
The Girls in ICT program aims to equip girls in primary schools with essential skills in coding, website design, game development, and animation. Since 2021, MTN Ghana has contributed over GHS15.6 million to the initiative, impacting the training of nine thousand girls and nine hundred teachers in basic ICT skills.
Ms. Wiafe urged the participants to take their training seriously and leverage the opportunities provided by the initiative.
Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Communications and Digitalization, praised MTN Ghana and all partners for their support. She called on current and potential partners to support the “Girls in ICT” initiative to further its impact.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Mr Titus Glover, Greater Accra Regional Minister; Hon. Charles Acheampong, Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalization; Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana; and Nii Ahene Nunoo III, Chief of the Abola Traditional Area, featured various activities, including an award ceremony honouring the top one hundred girls and outstanding individuals.
The awards presented included laptops, certificates, cash prizes, plaques, and fully equipped ICT laboratories for top schools.
