Telecommunication giant MTN Ghana has addressed mounting public discontent regarding the steep prices of internet data, a matter that has stirred considerable backlash on social media and significantly impacted the operations of local businesses.
The public’s dissatisfaction with the cost and reliability of data services has reached a boiling point, leading to calls for the dissolution of the National Communications Authority (NCA) board. This is a clear sign of the urgency and severity of the issue.
MTN Ghana’s classification as a Significant Market Player (SMP) is at the heart of the controversy. While it may sound technical, this designation is a key factor in the pricing structures that many consumers find unfavourable. Understanding this is crucial to grasping the full picture.
During a recent session with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer responded to these concerns. She pointed to regulatory measures aimed at balancing competition and public interest.
“The NCA has provided the rationale behind our current data pricing structure, emphasizing comparative affordability within the sub-region,” she stated. “As a designated significant market player, our pricing strategy is subject to specific regulatory mandates intended to enhance market competitiveness.”
She elaborated, “The structure is designed to stimulate market dynamics and ensure sustained competition. These considerations reflect the broader public interest objectives guiding our operations.”
The dialogue underscores the concerted efforts by both MTN Ghana and regulatory authorities to navigate a complex landscape of consumer expectations and industry regulations, providing reassurance to the public.
