Staff Volunteers from MTN Ghana will this month digitize teaching and learning, as the company?s annual employee volunteer programme, 21 Days of Y?ello Care.

The 21 Days of Y?ello Care challenge is an annual employee volunteer initiative launched by MTN Group in 2007. The challenge is aimed at encouraging MTN staff to participate in Community Service for 21 days in each year in June.

For the second consecutive year, MTN employees will unite under the theme of ?Investing in education for all?, as they embark on various educational projects within communities in Ghana for 21 days in June.

?Digitisation of learning and teaching is particularly close to our heart at MTN,?says Xolisa Vapi, General Manager for MTN Group Corporate Affairs. ?In fact, MTN Foundations are already doing a great deal of work with our commercial partners and communities in various countries. We are therefore excited that through Y?ello Care, employees have an opportunity to further contribute towards closing the digital divide in our communities, more so amongst students and teachers in remote parts of the countries where MTN operates,? she adds.

Launching the annual Y?ello Care challenge in Accra on Tuesday 2nd June, the CEO of MTN Ghana, Mr. Serame Taukobong outlined some of the exciting activities employees of MTN would be undertaking. ?This year, MTN Ghana staff volunteers will build e-libraries in Accra, Kumasi and Tarkwa. These e-libraries will open up access to over 40,000 e-books from around the world on a wide range of subjects, from the sciences to the arts and much more. This will be a very useful resource for both teachers and students? he added.

Mr. Taukobong stressed on the need for an increased uptake of ICT to transform teaching and learning in Ghana, ?the world has been in a dynamic change mode since the emergence of Information and Communication Technology, it has therefore become necessary to inculcate technology into the traditional ways of teaching and learning? and our staff are happy to roll out these e-libraries.? He said.

During this period, MTN staff will also mount a Cloud Service demonstration to connect two tertiary institutions to promote the exchange and transfer of knowledge. The cloud service will be provided for free whilst the equipment (computer, projector screens and modems) will be donated to the schools.

In addition, MTN Ghana staff volunteers will design and sew school bags for children in selected schools across the three business districts. These bags will be recycled from old banners and flexi materials. MTN staff is also raising funds via short code 1340 to purchase resources to empower teachers.

In Kumasi within the Northern Business District, the launch held at MTN?s Nhyiaso office was attended by representatives of MTN?s distributors and staff Mr. James Basintale ,the Senior Manager for the Northern Business District, encouraged the staff to volunteer their time to brighten the lives of the beneficiary communities/ institutions.

In the Western and Central Business District, MTN Staff Volunteers joined partners at the Western Regional Theatre for the 2014 Y?ello Care Opening Ceremony.

MTN volunteers in other Operating countries will also be undertaking various projects during the period. In West Africa, MTN Cameroon employees will partner the UNHCR, Plan Cameroon and Ministry of Basic Education to introduce underprivileged children at six social care institutions to the use of ICT and social media. To ensure they remain connected beyond the duration of the programme, each centre will be equipped with a computer, receive internet connectivity.

Among other things, the ?21 Days of Y?ello Care? is a competition amongst MTN operations to secure the highest number of staff involved in volunteerism and initiating projects with remarkable impact. The country with highest staff participation wins the prize money of $100,000 to be reinvested in community projects.

Since its inception in 2007, MTN Ghana remains the most awarded for volunteerism and projects, picking up the 2008 WECA (West and Central Africa) Regional award, overall Y?ello Care Challenge winners for years 2010 & 2011 and also the Y?ello Care ICT Project prize for 2013.
