MobileMoney Limited (MTN MoMo) celebrated a milestone of 15 years of revolutionizing financial technology in Ghana with a grand Stakeholder Dinner and Awards Night at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.
The event honoured MTN MoMo’s achievements and recognized the critical contributions of partners, industry leaders, and customers who have driven the growth of digital finance across the country.
The evening was marked by reflections on MTN MoMo’s journey, with Shaibu Haruna, CEO of MobileMoney Limited Ghana, expressing gratitude to the fintech community, media, and key stakeholders who have played a significant role in MoMo’s success.

“Today, we crown our 15-year journey with this celebration, recognizing the invaluable contributions of our partners. Without their support and the trust of our millions of customers, we would not be here,” Haruna said.
Since its inception in 2009, MTN MoMo has transformed Ghana’s financial services landscape, providing millions with access to convenient, secure, and affordable mobile money services. The platform, with millions of users, continues to be an essential tool for financial transactions.
Haruna acknowledged the early adopters, agents, and merchants who believed in MoMo despite initial skepticism. “From our humble beginnings with simple feature phones, we envisioned a future where every Ghanaian could access financial services with ease and convenience through mobile phones,” he said.
Haruna also emphasized MTN’s commitment to ongoing innovation and collaboration, made possible through partnerships with regulators and technology providers that have helped the company navigate regulatory and technical challenges over the years.
Looking ahead, Haruna shared MTN MoMo’s vision for the next decade, where even informal workers, such as taxi drivers and small business owners, can engage in advanced financial activities like investing and trading via mobile.
“Our mission for the next decade is to empower every Ghanaian with essential financial tools, expanding financial inclusion and digital empowerment across the country,” Haruna concluded.
The Chief Finance Officer of MobileMoney Limited, Susan Yawson, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the pivotal role of MTN MoMo’s partners.
“Fifteen years ago, we started this journey with a simple yet groundbreaking idea: mobile money,” she said. “Launched under the memorable phrase ‘Mensa Aka’, this concept has since transformed Ghana’s financial landscape in ways few could have anticipated.”
Yawson emphasized that the event was one of celebration and recognition, honoring the resilience and dedication of MTN MoMo’s stakeholders in advancing the mission of financial inclusion.
“We are here to recognize stakeholders for their contributions to making Ghana a cashless society,” she said, encouraging attendees to enjoy the festivities and look forward to the next phase of MTN MoMo’s journey.
The evening was a testament to MTN MoMo’s impact on Ghana’s financial sector, setting the stage for an even more ambitious future as the company continues to transform lives through digital finance.
