MTN Mobile Money Limited has issued an urgent warning to customers amid a spike in reported cases of mobile money (MoMo) fraud across Ghana.

The telecommunications giant emphasized that all official communications will exclusively originate from the number 0244300000, urging users to disregard calls or messages from any other source claiming affiliation with the company.

The alert follows distressing accounts from customers who reported significant financial losses. A widely circulated video depicted a woman recounting how GH¢11,000 vanished from her MoMo wallet, while another social media user claimed to have lost GH¢13,000 earmarked for a medical procedure. Both victims maintained they never disclosed their personal identification numbers (PINs) to third parties.

Godwin Tamakloe, MTN’s Chief Regulatory, Risk, and Compliance Officer, addressed the surge in fraud during an interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive. He clarified that funds cannot be withdrawn from a MoMo account without the account holder inadvertently sharing sensitive details, such as a PIN or authorization code. “The only number MTN uses to contact customers is 0244300000,” Tamakloe stated. “Any other number claiming to represent MTN is fraudulent—hang up immediately.” He further cautioned against scams where fraudsters pose as company officials offering to “secure” accounts, stressing that such tactics aim to exploit trust.

MTN reiterated practical steps for users to safeguard their accounts, including never sharing PINs, verifying unsolicited communications through the official hotline, and reporting suspicious activity to authorities. While the company affirmed its commitment to combating fraud through enhanced security measures, it underscored that customer awareness remains critical to preventing losses.

Mobile money services have become integral to Ghana’s financial ecosystem, with millions relying on platforms like MoMo for transactions in a region with high mobile penetration but limited traditional banking access. This reliance has made users frequent targets for evolving scams, prompting repeated calls for vigilance. MTN’s latest advisory mirrors broader industry efforts to balance innovation with consumer protection as digital payment systems expand.

If It’s Not 0244300000, It’s a Scam! Godwin Tamakloe, MTN Mobile Money
