Kampala – Drip irrigation should be exploited primarily in drought-prone regions of the country to save crops and avert food shortages, President Museveni has said.
Mr Museveni made the remarks while addressing farmers who visited him at his Kisozi ranch on Thursday.
“We are focusing on three issues, including improving sanitation in homes, food security and incomes. I also want to encourage you to use drip irrigation to counter the effects of drought in this region,” he said.
Through poverty eradication programme, government has constructed water dams and reclaimed various swamps in Kisozi. The water for production is, however, still a challenge.
Mr Museveni made on-spot visits to a select farmers in Kisozi to assess the progress in implementing projects aimed at improving food security and incomes.
He visited farmers in Kikuuma, Obutugu, Lutuungu B, Lutuungu A, Kisozi and Kajjumiro most of whom specialize in animal production, especially goats and local cows.
The farmers were selected as models for transformation and have been getting technical and material support from the poverty eradication programme under State House.
Greater Kisozi region in Gomba district has been severely affected by the current drought causing loss to their crops.
