Namibia appeals for blood donation ahead of holiday season

The Namibia Blood Transfusion Services (NamBTS) on Thursday appealed for blood donations ahead of the coming holiday season.

Namibian blood banks will need a minimum of 4,500 blood donations in the next six weeks to ensure that hospitals across the country have sufficient blood stock to treat patients during the festive season, NamBTS Education Officer Titus Shivute told Xinhua.

NamBTS now has blood stock for just over 13 days, he said.

“We however expect this figure to drop during December because collections decrease significantly and demand increases gradually, especially in emergency cases,” Shivute said. “During this period last year, we had a blood stock of close to six days.” Enditem
