Namibia expands testing for COVID-19 after receiving support from China

Coronavirus Test Kits

Namibia has revised their testing strategy for COVID-19 targeting to control community spread following the improved testing capacity created by the recently donated equipment from China, a senior official said Wednesday.

Minister of Health Kalumbi Shangula said the country has drastically improved its testing capacity since receiving additional testing kits from China and will now start targeting community containment as a measure to make sure the virus does not spread further.

“We now have a better capacity to test as many people as possible. This means we will now specifically target communities where we feel the spread has a high risk locally. Of late all our cases are imported but it is now important to make sure that we also increase our testing into the community,” he said.

Shangula said it is important that Namibia expeditiously test as many people as possible in areas where they suspect spread could be fast.

He also added that the Namibian government has also decided to make sure that a lockdown is extended countrywide so as to try and contain the disease. Enditem
