Namibia says it has received part of the money allocated to the agriculture ministry by the European Development Fund.
In a statement dated Jan. 12, 2017, the agriculture ministry said they had received 14 million Namibian dollars (1.1 million U.S. dollars) to use in rehabilitating two abattoirs.
The European Development Fund allocated 110 million Namibian dollars (about 8.9 million U.S. dollars) to Namibia’s Directorate of Veterinary Services in the agriculture ministry.
The statement said work to renovate the abattoirs at Katima Mulilo, the north-eastern town of Katima Mulilo and the northern town of Oshakati would start soon.
Both the abattoirs that shut down in 2015 were run by the Meat Company of Namibia but ceased operations when the lease agreements expired.
After the renovations, the statement said, the Oshakati abattoir will be operated by a company called Oshakati Elolo, while the Zambezi Meat Corporation will lease the Zambezi abattoir.
The agriculture ministry said the 25-year lease agreements would be administered by the Agro Marketing and Trade Agency that will also be responsible for maintenance. Enditem
