The Namibian water utility NamWater has signed a contract with China Jiangxi International and Homefin Properties to extend and upgrade the Outapi Water Treatment Works, ensuring a reliable and increased water supply to Outapi and the surrounding areas.

The upgrade will address the current and future water needs of Outapi, a town in northern Namibia near the border with Angola, and surrounding areas, NamWater Chief Executive Abraham Nehemia said in a statement Tuesday.

The existing water treatment plant, commissioned in 2001, has reached its full capacity due to growing urban population and increased water demand, he said.

“The government, through NamWater, has mobilized the necessary resources to address the issue of sustainable water supply, as water catalyzes any development,” Nehemia said.

Representatives from China Jiangxi International and Homefin Properties said they are committed to delivering quality work, and leveraging their extensive experience and previous successful collaborations.

The new treatment plant, designed by Element Consulting Engineers of Namibia in association with Mariswe Consulting Engineers from South Africa, will have a capacity of 438 cubic meters an hour.

The project, valued at over 123 million Namibian dollars (about 6.7 million U.S. dollars) is expected to be completed within 16 months.
