Namibia’s apple sale initiative continues to raise funds to tackle cancer

Namibia’s Cancer Association (CAN) and project partners have raised around 170,000 U.S. dollars (2.5 million Namibia dollars) for cancer victims through the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project.

The annual project, which ran for the month of July, saw its partner Bank Windhoek hand over the proceeds from the sale of apples to CAN at an event held on Friday in Windhoek, despite the current economic woes in the country.

Speaking at the handover event, Bank Windhoek’s marketing executive Jacquiline Park said the number of Namibians diagnosed with cancer increases every year and funding to CAN needs to be both continuous and consistent.

“Funds raised through the project last year have been allocated to the Patient Financial Assistance Program and pediatric cancer care,” she added.

Park called on the continued funding of cancer awareness programs and organizations to mitigate the rising number of reported cancer diagnoses in the country.

The annual cancer project is aimed to create cancer awareness and raise funds for much need support in the community. The project taps into the charitable nature of ordinary people who are willing to buy an apple for 40 U.S. cents.

The project, which is now in its 19th year, has grown into one of the biggest corporate responsibility undertakings in Namibia and has raised in excess of 1.7 million U.S. dollars since its inception, she added.

Statistics from the Namibia National Cancer Registry, administered by the Cancer Association of Namibia, reveal that between 3,400 and 4,000 Namibians are newly diagnosed with cancer annually. Enditem
