The Flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo Addo, is one of the few veteran politicians in Ghana whose life span in our body politics span over 3 decades. Within this period he has served as a Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and and a flagbearer and in the NPP.
Even though he was in the forefront in Ghana’s struggle to become democratic during the AFRC and PNDC era, it was when he won the race to become the flagbearer in of the biggest opposition party in 2007 that he was most scrutinized. During the period, all sorts of allegations have been levelled against him with most of them ending up as lies to tarnish his hard earned reputation.
We bring you a number times Nana Addo was lied against.
1. Abubakari Rufai, the 32-year-old man accused Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of urinating on the walls of a mosque at the Yagbonwura Palace in Damango, thereby defiling the place. He died of urine retention on 7 July 2013. The opposition NDC used that as a campaign message saying Nana Addo had displayed contempt for Islam and muslims. Even though it turned out to be false, Rufai did not live to tell his story but the NPP however paid a visit to his family during his funeral and his father took the opportunity to beg Nana Addo on his son’s behalf.
2. Another lie told about Nana Addo is from the self acclaimed security expect Irbad Ibrahim, about his knowledge of the 2 GITMO detainees who were brought into the country. “I can say for a fact that Nana Akufo-Addo was duly informed six clear months before the Gitmo detainees touched down…he was informed by the Americans…there was broad-based consultation,” he claimed on the station. It however turned out to be untrue and that Nana Addo only was informed about the decision when the 2 arrived. In other to keep his credibility, Irbard Ibrahim in a facebook apologised to Nana Addo and called it information gap.
3. The recent Lies that has been told on the NPP flagbearer is one told by Frimpong Adakabre after the party issued a statement to boycott his programme. Adakabre a day after the statement disclosed he has been threatened and abused by Akufo Addo in the past. But in a rather strange turn of events, Adakabre has come out to say he lied about Nana Addo threatening and abusing him. Why he said what he said still remains a mystery to everyone, with others calling for his sack.
Yes politicians are people who are the least truthful, but Akufo Addo is one of the few who have had a credible political life and its not strange his opponents always go the length to find a way to taint him. we believe running up the November elections, lots of such lies will become the order of the but it our hope it is minimised to its minimum bearing.
