His spokesperson, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, the National Chief Imam, has emphasized the urgent need for collective responsibility in combating illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.
His call to action addresses two pressing issues in Ghana: the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining and the rising political tensions as the December 7 elections approach.
In his statement, the Chief Imam expressed deep concern over the harmful effects of galamsey on the nation’s water bodies and agricultural lands, particularly cocoa farms, which are crucial to Ghana’s economy.
He warned that pollution from toxic substances like mercury could force Ghana to face a future where it must import drinking water.
“We have been cautioned that if we do not act swiftly, we may face the unthinkable reality of importing drinking water,” he stated, urging all citizens—from the President to local authorities and everyday Ghanaians—to take responsibility for addressing the crisis before it causes irreversible damage.
Alongside environmental issues, the Chief Imam addressed the escalating political tensions ahead of the elections.
He called on political leaders and stakeholders, particularly the Electoral Commission, to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
The Chief Imam urged political parties to avoid incendiary language that could incite violence, particularly among the youth.
“No politician is worth the blood of any citizen,” he declared, underscoring the importance of maintaining Ghana’s hard-won peace and stability.
His message is particularly poignant as Ghana faces significant challenges from illegal mining and political unrest.
The Chief Imam called for national unity, accountability, and a collective effort to tackle these issues, reminding Ghanaians of the need to safeguard the nation’s resources and peace.
As the country grapples with these critical concerns, the Chief Imam’s voice adds to the chorus of calls for action and stability, urging citizens and leaders to prioritize the nation’s welfare.
