The National Media Commission (NMC) in Ghana has launched initiatives to safeguard journalists before the 2024 elections, urging media practitioners to uphold professionalism and adhere to ethical standards.

In light of the upcoming general elections, the NMC stressed the importance of accurate reporting and cautioned against disseminating unverified information that could potentially incite unrest.

Executive Secretary George Sarpong highlighted the commission’s strategy to collaborate closely with regional stakeholders and media professionals to ensure journalists can work safely and effectively during the electoral period.

“Our approach involves establishing a Media Advisory Committee tasked with supporting journalists and addressing safety concerns,” Sarpong stated. “This committee will play a pivotal role in promoting responsible journalism and combating misinformation through engagement and swift resolution of grievances.”

Chairman Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo emphasized the dangers of relying solely on social media for news without verification, urging traditional media outlets to maintain rigorous journalistic standards.

“The integrity of our profession depends on accurate, verified reporting,” Ayeboafo emphasized. “Journalists must exercise caution to prevent the spread of misinformation, particularly during this critical electoral cycle.”
The NMC’s proactive measures underscore its commitment to fostering a secure environment for media practitioners while upholding the integrity of journalism in Ghana.
