National Sanitation Authority in the offing – Veep


Ghana as a country will soon have National Sanitation Authority and a National Sanitation Fund to help tackle sanitation and water challenges which has been thwarting national development over the years.

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made this known at this year’s Mole WASH conference at Ho, Volta Region. According to him, the government has initiated processes towards the establishment of the Authority.

The Vice-President further said the Akufo-Addo administration was committed to issues of water and sanitation, as evidenced in the creation, for the first time, of a Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.

This he said, the government is optimistic that the establishment of such bodies would be a game-changer in the national water and sanitation drive.

According to Dr Bawumia, the government’s vision is to ensure that all and sundry have access to well-managed water, sanitation and hygienic environment.

This he said, under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP): 3,350 water and sanitation projects are also either ongoing or have been completed.

This he said, majority of these projects are to address the provision of water and toilets across every district in Ghana.

The Vice –President, however, commended Ghana Coalition of NGOs in the Water and Sanitation Sector (CONIWAS) for their tremendous support towards the WASH sector. This he said, the government would continue to work closely with them to help achieve the desired results.

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Ms Cecilia Abena Dapaah, also highlighted the ongoing measures geared towards addressing the sanitation challenge in the country.

This she said, the provision of 20,000 waste bins across the country and collaboration with security agencies to protect water resources.

This year’s conference was themed “Thirty Years of Multi Stakeholder Dialogue on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; Reflections and Prospects.” It is being attended by stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector.
