The Ministry of National Security has issued a statement addressing recent comments by Hon. Mahama Ayariga, NDC Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Constituency.
Ayariga questioned the necessity of the Ministry’s monthly budget of Gh¢ 6,000,000 allocated to manage the Bawku conflict. The Ministry emphasized its responsibility for nationwide security operations, which it coordinates with relevant security and intelligence agencies.
The escalation of inter-ethnic tensions in Bawku in 2021 led to significant loss of life, displacement, and economic disruption.
In response, a special operation was established in February 2023 to maintain peace in Bawku and other affected areas in the North East Region.
The Gh¢ 6,000,000 monthly budget supports these operations, covering costs such as fuel for Armoured Personnel Carriers, food rations for Task Force personnel, special intelligence operations, and civil-military activities aimed at fostering societal cohesion and stability.
The Ministry clarified that these funds are part of its general operational budget but have been redirected to maintain peace in Bawku.
This reallocation, while necessary, diverts resources from other critical areas like enhancing Ghana’s resilience against terrorism and violent extremism.
The Ministry expressed disappointment at Ayariga’s politicization of the issue, highlighting that such statements could misinform the public, reignite tensions, and endanger the lives of security personnel.
The Ministry remains committed to sustaining its operations in Bawku to ensure the country’s peace and stability.
