The National Communication Authority (NCA) has responded to growing public outcry over high internet data pricing, assuring stakeholders of measures to address concerns affecting businesses and consumers.

Recent calls for the dissolution of the NCA board have surged amid complaints about steep data costs and inconsistent service, attributed in part to MTN’s classification as a Significant Market Power (SMP).

In a statement released on June 21, 2024, the NCA clarified that the SMP designation is intended to foster equitable competition within Ghana’s telecommunications sector rather than impose undue constraints on MTN’s operations.

The NCA highlighted strategic measures, including balanced interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology-agnostic policies, highlighting that these initiatives are designed to stimulate competition, drive innovation, and safeguard consumer rights.

Contrary to public perception, the NCA referenced a recent report ranking Ghana as the third-most affordable country for mobile internet data in Africa and second within West Africa.

The NCA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating closely with industry stakeholders to ensure consistent and reliable internet access across Ghana, underscoring its ongoing efforts to enhance service quality and affordability.
