The opposition National Democratic Congress held a nationwide protest march against the Electoral Commission over the alleged discrepancies in the national electoral register at the just-ended exhibition exercise. The anomalies included alleged voter transfer without first notifying the victims. In several instances, voters’ names were missing from the electoral roll without the EC providing tangible reasons.
The NDC indicated that the demonstration was to ensure the EC found a lasting solution to the multiple and unpardonable errors it has been committing lately to prevent voter disenfranchisement and violence in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
The National Democratic Congress noted that without the protest march, the EC and many qualified voters would be ignorant about the severity of the discrepancies it discovered in the electoral register, which the party described as ‘not fit for purpose’.
The demonstration attracted several Ghanaians, including Civil Society Organisations, the clergy, and sympathizers of the NDC.
The protesters wielded placards bearing messages such as “Your Incompetence Is Legendary”, “Say No To EC Rigging 2024 Elections”, “We Demand Change Now”, and “Remove Duplicate Names Now” among others.
Several supporters and sympathizers from the various constituencies marched through the principal streets of the Eastern Regional capital in Koforidua to register their displeasure about what they described as widespread discrepancies in the current voter register.
Presenting a petition to the Eastern Regional Office of the Electoral Commission, the regional executives of the NDC led by their Chairman, Mark Oliver Kevor, and the National Youth Organizer charged the EC to do the needful by ensuring that, there was a credible voter register for the December 7 general elections.
