Adam Mutawakilu, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Damongo Constituency, Ghana, has been accused of assaulting an Electoral Commission (EC) Returning Officer named Mr Adams during an ongoing voter transfer exercise for security services in Damongo.
The incident required security agencies to intervene to restore order, prompting questions about Mutawakilu’s interactions with security personnel and electoral officers during his visits to EC offices.
According to an eyewitness, a female police officer was present for the voter transfer exercise at the centre. Though she was not in uniform, she had her identification card.
Mutawakilu allegedly confronted the EC officer, accusing him of engaging in unlawful activities.
Reports suggest that the EC official has been taken to Damongo District Hospital for treatment, while Mutawakilu, also known as Garlus, is being interrogated by security services.
The EC is conducting a voter transfer exercise for prison inmates, security personnel, and students from July 3 to 5, 2024. Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC overseeing Corporate Services, disclosed this information following an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra.
This exercise enables prison inmates to transfer their voting rights to their respective constituencies. It allows security personnel who missed previous transfer opportunities to relocate their votes accordingly.
