Mustapha Foyo Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has acknowledged his party’s failure to maintain vigilance during the 2020 elections, attributing their loss to this lapse. In an interview with Onua TV’s Maakye, Gbande conceded, “Captain, I must admit, we slept in 2020; we were asleep, and this time around, we are well awake.”
Gbande also expressed concerns regarding the current government’s alleged manipulation of the electoral process, specifically targeting Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Gbande claimed, “The government currently uses Bossman. He is a dangerous actor at the Electoral Commission today… What does Bossman have to hide?”
His accusations are related to perceived discrepancies in the voters’ register, which the NDC had previously flagged to the Electoral Commission.
The party has accused the Commission of systematically transferring voters to different centres without their consent.
Dr Eric Bossman Asare has acknowledged some errors in the voters’ register but rejected allegations of intentional electoral fraud. He stated, “Preliminary investigations… revealed that voter transfers were indeed effected for thirty-eight individuals using the credentials of an Electoral Commission official… It is also untrue that the Commission has added names to the voters’ register to rig elections for a particular party.”
Gbande asserted that the NDC has now intensified its vigilance to prevent a repeat of the issues experienced in the 2020 elections.
