Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured that a future NDC government will focus on improving the existing Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, which was initiated by the current government, rather than cancelling it.
Speaking at a rally in Sekondi during her three-day campaign tour of the Western Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who served as the Minister of Education under the previous NDC administration, emphasized that her party is committed to refining the program to address the current challenges faced by students, teachers, and schools.
“We have no plans to cancel the Free SHS program,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated. “Instead, we will work diligently to enhance it by tackling emerging issues.”
She underscored the NDC’s commitment to educational advancement, highlighting the significant investments in building Community Day Schools and initiating the Progressively Free SHS program.
Responding to concerns and propaganda suggesting an imminent cancellation of the Free SHS program, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the public to disregard these claims. She outlined several key areas of focus for improvement under an NDC government, including investing in classroom and boarding infrastructure to eliminate the double track system, providing necessary teaching and learning materials, and ensuring a steady supply of food for students.
“Should we ignore the issues brought by the current education calendar that affect quality teaching? Should we neglect the need for better food for our children? Should we not enhance our schools with state-of-the-art teaching materials and equipment?” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang questioned.
“We are committed to addressing these challenges and making the Free SHS policy more effective.”
The NDC running mate further detailed that the party has a comprehensive plan to improve the implementation of Free SHS and elevate the quality of secondary education in Ghana. This plan, when executed, will bring about a new era of educational excellence and opportunity in our country, giving us all reason to be hopeful for the future.
She urged voters to support John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections to realize these educational improvements and to create job opportunities for the youth through the proposed 24-Hour Economy policy. Your support is crucial in this journey towards a better future for our children and our country. Let’s stand together and make this vision a reality.
