91-year-old man has set a weightlifting world record.
Sy Perlis broke the record for the 90 and over age division by bench pressing 85kg at the National Bench Push-Pull Press and Dead Lift Championships in Arizona ? surpassing the former title holder?s attempt by 23.5 kgs.
The previous record of 61kg had remained unbroken for eight years, reports Metro.
Perlis ? who took up weightlifting aged 60 and only started to compete at 86 ? said that the sport was good for him.
?I got a lot of satisfaction out of it, and it made me feel good, and it was good for me,? he explained.
He also commented that his doctor is happy for him to continue weightlifting despite his old age, saying: ?[My doctor] says if I can do it, do it.?
The pensioner goes to the gym five days a week and does a mixture of cardiovascular and resistance training.
Gus Rethwisch, president of the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters, said: ?We?ve had a lot of lifters in their middle 80s, late 80s and occasionally we get one 90 and over, but they?ve never inspired people [like Mr Perlis has].?
