Mr. Alex Kofi Annin, General Manager of the Newmont Ahafo South Mine, said the mine is projected to produce over 600,000 ounces of gold in 2025, following a strong performance in the previous year when output reached 887,000 ounces.
Since commercial production began in 2006, Ahafo South has yielded more than eight million ounces of gold to date.
In 2024 the mine contributed in excess of GH₵7.5 billion in taxes, out of a total GH₵9.4 billion paid by Newmont’s three operating mines in Ghana, underscoring its vital role in national revenue generation.
Newmont’s commitment to sustainable operations has been recognised with consecutive accolades for decarbonisation from KalTire’s Maple Programme and with Ahafo South being named Best Green Mine by the Ghana Chamber of Mines at both the 2023 and 2022 Ghana Mining Industry Awards.
Looking ahead, the Ahafo North Project comprising multiple open‑pit mines and a standalone mill remains on track to commence commercial production in the second half of 2025, adding between 275,000 and 325,000 ounces of gold annually at all‑in sustaining costs of $800 to $900 per ounce.
Ghana surpassed South Africa as Africa’s leading gold producer in 2024, with national output reaching a record four million ounces, a milestone that highlights the strategic importance of mines like Ahafo South in driving economic growth and positioning Ghana at the forefront of global gold production.
