Newmont Corporation has announced the appointment of Abdul-Rahman Amoadu as its first Ghanaian Managing Director to oversee operations across Africa, effective from 1 August 2024.

Amoadu’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Newmont in its history on the continent, where the company operates two mines in Ghana (Akyem and Ahafo South) and is advancing the Ahafo North project.

Natascha Viljoen, Chief Operating Officer of Newmont, praised Amoadu’s extensive finance, operations, and international trade background, noting his global experience and familiarity with Africa as crucial assets for leading Newmont’s African business operations.

Newmont, the largest gold producer in Ghana and a significant employer in the mining sector, began commercial production in Africa in 2006 with the Ahafo South mine, followed by the Akyem mine in 2013. Amoadu’s appointment is pivotal as Newmont continues advancing its Ahafo North project, which is poised to become its third mine in Ghana.

Before this role, Amoadu served as Managing Director of Newmont’s Yanacocha mine in Peru and held key finance positions in South America and Africa.

His career includes significant leadership roles at Maersk, spanning Africa and Europe.

The appointment underscores Newmont’s commitment to local leadership and operational excellence in Africa’s mining sector, setting a precedent for future growth and sustainability initiatives across the region.
