NGOs engage Media on child welfare policy

The Ghana Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Coalition on the Rights of the Child has held an engagement session with about 30 media practitioners from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions, to brief them on the new Child and Family Welfare Policy.

The session was also used to present the concluding observation sent to the state party from the United Nations Expert Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Welfare policyIt was to deepen the understanding of the participants on the policy to enable them play effective advocacy roles towards its implementation.

Barima Akwasi Amankwaah, Acting National Coordinator of the Ghana NGOs Coalition on the Rights of the Child, who made the presentations at the session in Tamale on Tuesday, said the Child and Family Welfare Policy launched by government in July this year was meant to address challenges facing children in society.

Barima Amankwaah stressed need for all stakeholders including state agencies, traditional authorities, religious leaders, and the media, amongst others, to play their parts effectively to ensure the successful implementation of the policy to address the challenges confronting children in society.

He called on the media to concentrate more on issues affecting children in relation to the policy to enable authorities to work towards addressing them to promote the welfare of children.

He called on District Assemblies to commit resources to issues of child protection to create awareness among people about what to do to promote the welfare and best interest of children.

He also called for alternative form of punishment that could help to unearth other potentials in children, instead of always caning them for any shortcomings.

There were presentations by two children on behalf of all children of the three regions calling on government to increase resources towards implementing the policy to address their needs.
