According to NHIA CEO Da Costa Aboagye, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has received international recognition for its innovative ‘Preventive Promotive Approach’ to managing noncommunicable diseases.
In an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Thursday, Aboagye detailed how the strategy emerged from a review of the National Health Insurance Scheme’s (NHIS) cost burden, highlighting diseases such as diabetes and hypertension as significant contributors to expenditure.
To combat these issues, the NHIA developed the ‘Preventive Promotive Approach,’ which aims to provide every Ghanaian with the opportunity for annual health check-ups at any health facility.
This initiative facilitates early disease detection and improves overall health outcomes.
The strategy has garnered significant international interest, with the World Bank inviting Aboagye to speak at various programs.
Last week, Aboagye also met with representatives from the National Health Service (NHS) of England, who have expressed interest in investing in the initiative.
Aboagye described the ‘Preventive Promotive Approach’ as a transformative development for Ghana’s healthcare system.
He emphasized that the strategy aims to increase life expectancy, enhance early disease detection, and support the broader goal of achieving universal health coverage in Ghana.
