The new code was adopted during a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday in the capital Niamey, under the leadership of Prime Minister Brigi Rafini.
The source said the new code was conceived to respond to different needs of actors in the international logistics chain and to adapt to the demands of the sub-regional community codes, especially those of the Economic Community of West African States and the West African Economic and Monetary Union.
According to the Nigerien government, the 1961 law determining the country’s customs regime, had become obsolete 55 years since its adoption.
“It is certainly useful on some of its aspects, but it cannot respond to the current international customs administration standards,” the source said. Enditem
