Nigeria has been carrying out tests daily for the novel coronavirus with the total number of tests reaching 12,004, head of the nation’s disease control center Chikwe Ihekweazu said Tuesday.
The country was working hard to improve the numbers, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) chief said during a live briefing in Abuja.
The NCDC was working closely with more private laboratories to expand testing capacity in Nigeria, he said, adding that the measure was taken to ensure that the country maintained its testing capacity.
The medical expert also announced the inclusion of two more laboratories into the country’s COVID-19 pandemic molecular network, bringing the total number of molecular laboratories in the network to 17.
Ihekweazu said all these were aimed at scaling up testing across the country in order to win the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
The center on Monday confirmed 64 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number of infections in Nigeria to 1,337.
Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation, with a total population of almost 200 million. Enditem
