An auto crash killed seven people along the Port Harcourt-Enugu road, one of the busiest expressways in South Nigeria, local authorities said on Friday.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which confirmed the incident to reporters, said it occurred Thursday evening.

An articulated vehicle rammed into some local stores near the expressway and hit a car at another mechanic workshop nearby, said Ogbonnaya Kalu, a commander of the FRSC in the state.

The break of the articulated vehicle failed, and the driver lost control before it crashed into nearby shops, Kalu said.

He said four traders had died instantly when the vehicle hit the shops, adding that the remaining three victims were trapped in the other car.

Local police said they had launched an investigation to further ascertain the cause of the crash. Enditem
